A Wandering Spirit

Inspired by 18th Century map maker, Ino Tadataka, Sohei Nishino combines cartography and photography to create ‘diorama maps’.

Sohei Nishino is a young, award-winning artist from Japan, represented by Michael Hoppen Gallery in London. He creates images after six-weeks treks in various cities, methodically capturing images and cartographic notes along the way. Upon returning to his studio, Nishino hand-develops each photograph and referencing his memory and notes alone, collages them into massive maps.

These monumental dioramas encapsulate the artists own wandering spirit, with references to his personal experiences hidden in the details of the images; as well, they present a view of the transient landscape of these evolving cities. The new exhibition features images of Tokyo, New Delhi, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro and Jersualem, and is on view from 31st October to 7th January 2015. riddle_stop 2
