Can I Get an Amen For The Sausage….
We wander down to Waterloo Vaults for a fun brunch and some punchy Bloody Marys
Review by Rupert Watkins
Slap Ya Papa’s Bayou Banquet pop up came to an end yesterday with one final brunch. Taking place in The Vaults at Waterloo this eclectic, fun and tucked away space has been perfect for the New Orleans supper club’s residence. Stark concrete walls were covered with original modern art which softened the glare of the exposed lights. Tables were communal, wooden and simple. The bar next to the open kitchen was darker, slightly industrial chic and served a rather fine cocktail.
The Bloody Marys were indeed bloody here. Made with bourbon and a splash of sherry, these were definitely hair of the dog titans (which was lucky as the reviewer might have been feeling a little under par on the morning in question). With small green chillies in them rather than celery, these were delicious with a nice kick.
Called through for our mass sitting, we were treated to the Southern jazz vibe of Brixton bluesman and three-time UK harmonica champion Errol Linton alongside long time accomplice and guitar player Adam Blake. To whet our appetites, delicious fluffy muffins were circulated before the main dish of eggs, sausage, bacon and grits was placed before us. A hearty meal, the streaky bacon was crisp, sausage gamey and satisfying and the poached egg runny.
Though the Bayou Banquet has ended, the supper club Slap Ya Papa clearly knows how to throw together a fun, stylish and relaxed event. They’re launching a monthly music series down in Pop Brixton and work is afoot for their Thankgiving popup running between November 27th and December 12th. Keep an eye on Lucie Massey and Tristan Pringle’s southern supper club.
