For those wishing to escape the rat race and the big city lights, thread your way round the Royal Exchange and down to Throgmorton Street. Sitting under the street in the heart of London is Demon & Wise, a bar inspired by inner wickedness, maturity and wisdom in equal measure. Their signature drinks, the ‘Demon’ and the ‘Wise’ are changed on a regular basis as if to emphasis the ever fluctuating nature of the traits; only 100 of each drink are served before the next evolution.
The space is small with seating only, either at the bar or a choice of table or booth, and booking in advance recommended. Lit by wonderful light fixtures emitting an orange- yellow glow, the atmosphere is completed by a steady flow of soul and jazz music, washing over you and completing the escape from the buzz of city life. The menu is carefully chosen with quality over quantity and explanations from the staff on offer to ensure you select the correct poison.
Prices for cocktails start at £11 with only the signature cocktails costing more (£16) and wine from £7 a glass. Beer is available, but those who wish to indulge their hops habit are recommended to frequent the Arbiter, the sister location above, at street level.
