From 15th- 18th October 2014 in line with Frieze London, Hyatt Regency London- The Churchill has invited award-winning artist Hormazd Narielwalla, renown for his highly creative use of tailors patterns, as the Portman Square hotel’s Artist in Residence.
Setting up studio in the lobby of the hotel for Frieze week, guests and visitors will be able to view Narielwalla at work as he creates bespoke artwork using a copy of Churchill’s original suit patterns; the measures are taken from Henry Poole & Co archives - the acknowledged ‘Founders of Savile Row’ and Sir Winston Churchill’s tailors, from whom he ordered his first suit, 107 years ago. As Narielwalla works, visitors will also be able to view Henry Poole’s past ledger and measure books which refer to Churchill as a client, and the original weighing book from the jockey scales in the showroom.
Creating dynamic collages, Narielwalla uses tailoring patterns to create artworks exploring the human body in abstract form. His practice began in the workrooms of the tailoring firm Dege & Skinner in London’s Savile Row, with an artist’s book Dead Man’s Patterns (2008).
With Narielwalla as the official Artist in Residence, Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill further cements its ongoing support for artists, and encourages guests and visitors to interact with art in new ways, outside of the usual environment of a gallery or museum.
In 2013 Saatchi Art announced Narielwalla as ‘One to Watch’, and in 2014 he won the Saatchi Art Showdown prize – The Body Electric. His work is also currently exhibited in the hotel’s curated Saatchi Suite, in collaboration with Republic of Fritz HansenTM, and he has exhibited in London, Melbourne, Stockholm, Athens, New Delhi and New York.
The Churchill Bar & Terrace has created an exclusive cocktail to commemorate the collaboration between the Savile Row tailors and the hotel. The Chalk Stripe is available for a limited time only, during Frieze London. For the discerning guest, HINE cigar cognac is blended with Chase gin, and the bar’s very own Churchillian bitters and port reduction, topped with a twist of orange.
The Churchill Bar & Terrace is an elegant and inviting space with subtle references to the young Winston Churchill and his beloved wife Clementine. Using art, travel, animals, champagne, cigars and whisky, the bar celebrates the passions of this young man with the blessing of Churchill’s extended family.
Hormazd Narielwalla will be at work in the lobby of the hotel from 11.00-17.00 on Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 October, with his work available to view by the public free of charge.
Chalk Stripe – A Henry Poole cocktail for Frieze London - will be available at The Churchill Bar & Terrace from 15-18 October, priced at £16.
