Sixtyone
A hidden gastronomic gem in South Marylebone
Review by Marion Graham Photography by Andy Barnham
A neigbourhood restaurant in south Marylebone, just five minutes from Park Lane, Sixtyone is something of a gastro treasure trove with 3 AA Rosettes. Drinks on arrival revealed a seriously well stocked bar and subsequently seated in a quiet corner of the restaurant we were treated to impeccable service from a very knowledgeable maître-d who knew the menu and wine list inside-out.
We opted for the A La Carte Menu, which offered a varied selection of starters and mains. The Pig on Toast was accompanied by a 2013 Pourpre de Grezetie Blanc and Caluliflower Veloute with duck egg and truffle was partnered with a lovely Albarino Escencia Divina.
Main course was two exceptionally tasty meet dishes; a lean and tender Galloway beef fillet with puntarella and miso aubergine was served with a Scott Cabernet Shiraz, while the lamb shoulder melted in the mouth worked well with the flavours of the piclked garlic, with a Valpolicella Ripasso complementing the dish exceptionally well.
Desert was a perfectly cooked and very moreish Chocolate fondant and a Tiramisu accompanied by a Sauternes, Clos Lemcote 2009 and a Maury, Domaine Mas Amiel 2011
It’s hard not to come away from Sixtyone feeling you’ve found a very special place, and bona fide foodies will delight in the authenticity of the plates presented. It isn’t just about the food – it’s about the entire experience; but food is the main event in a menagerie of explosive acts
