City Drinkin’
Perennial Square Mile favourite, Sushi Samba has wrung the changes with its latest array of gin based cocktails. Unwind after a good day’s trading…
Review by Rupert Watkins
Perched above the glittering lights and busting streets of the City, sits Sushi Samba. Underneath the Duck & Waffle bar, they form a tempting target no inquisitive drinker should pass up. At Sushi Samba, a small open sushi counter inside leads to a stylish and vibrant outdoor drinks bar. Laid out round a u-shaped drinks counter, comfortable chairs, low banquettes and stunning views are the order of the day.
Under the alcoholically esoteric guidance of Head of Spirits and Cocktail Development Richard Woods, Sushi Samba regularly refines its selection of drinks. Their latest revolve around Bombay Sapphire, looking to draw out maximum flavour from this distinctive gin. Starting with the ‘In Fine Fennel’, this house take on the G’n’T was zingy and refreshing. Using green bartett pear slices and fennel leaves both softened and drew out some of the more distinctive Bombay botanicals – especially the cubeb (tailed pepper) and almond.
Those seeking slightly more adventurous drinks can turn to the ‘Mayan Rose’ Bombay with coffee infused aromatised wine with pistachio and pineapple served through crushed ice. The nuts and fruit gave it a sweet edge that balanced nicely with the gin. Moving on, my guest moved on to a ‘Yuzu Gin Fizz.’ With yuzu juice, shiso infusion and served slightly carbonated this was another slightly sweet but eminently drinkable number.
Those in the market for sharing have the ‘Matcha Punch’ – banana and pineapple served with a green tea infusion. Given the vibrant and funky atmosphere at Sushi Samba – the DJ was just warming up as my guest and I left – definitely one to fuel revellers into the night. Sushi Samba is different to its sister bar Duck & Waffle upstairs. Rather louder it may attract a slightly more raucous crowd. But as a fun way to kick off Thursday night drinks, its latest selection of drinks and outdoor views are hard to beat. Escape Excel and head there.
