Given what a laboured job Hollywood made of retelling David Mitchell’s 2004 novel Cloud Atlas over two hours, in the eponymous 2012 adaptation starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, it would be futile to attempt to even hint at the plot of Mitchell’s most layered, nuanced and non-linear book to date.
Suffice to say, expect gritty realism pitching up against the truly fantastical; frighteningly realistic dystopic visions predicting the barbaric mayhem which would follow the exhaustion of oil reserves; compelling narratives set within the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq… In other words, more globe-spanning, shape-shifting literary manna for less lazy readers.
