Swedish Timekeeping

In the market for a slick, Nordic and very attainable timepiece? Triwa could be just what you’re after….

Horology is something that I have never cared to write about, not because I don’t like watches - I really like them aesthetically. I normally wear a 1958 Longines that was bought for me as my 16th birthday present, it doesn’t really tell the time but it looks excellent. So it may not be surprising that I’ve always felt a bit lost looking through pages of watches all costing four thousand quid upwards…. far.. far upwards… It can be a little bit like discussing cars with people who know what they’re talking about, you realize that for aficionados it’s not really about the looks but about the mechanics. But it is also pretty essential for a man to have a good-looking timepiece that tells the time (unlike my Longines).

But recently I came across Triwa, a completely reasonably priced and good looking watch. Founded by four friends in Sweden in 2005 the brand very much mirrors the preppy, Nordic aesthetics of its founders. The video they produced last year showing them on their speedboat on their way to the island in the Archipelago they live on pretty much tells you what you need to know about the brand; clean lines, attractive lifestyle. The watches are all pretty simply designed, well-appointed pieces, not trying to rip off a classic Rolex or with a load of features that don’t actually work as you annoyingly find on a lot of mid-market watches. Also coming in from £149-£295 they’re difficult to argue with. They may not have the Swiss movements or jeweled bevels of the highest end of the market but, honestly, I’ve never really known what those are for in the first place. riddle_stop 2
