A Bar with Few Inpurities

The newly refurbished first floor martini lounge at Kings Cross Great Northern Hotel, Anthracite Lounge is a refined bolthole to sink a classic cocktail or two

Review by Andy Barnham

The Anthracite Lounge is the name of the newly refurbished snug bar on the first floor of the crescent shaped Great Northern Hotel. The bar, beautifully lit with all types of spirit wizardry to entice a discerning drinker, offers seating overlooking Kings Cross glass roof and is connected to two smaller fireplace snugs by a thin, long corridor with a high table and bar stools for extra seating.

The majority of the seating is comprised of banquettes suitable for up to three or four people, providing an intimate feel to this martini lounge. The iconic drink takes centre stage but for those who may prefer something different to gin or vodka, the menu has a curated selection of Champagne and Sparkling alongside an impressive selection of scotch and world whiskies (including some gorgeous Japanese and American offerings) and other distilled spirits such as cognac, calvados, armagnac, tequila and mezcal. The accompanying wines have been selected by Master of Wine Peter McCombie, one of only 300 globally who hold the award, who has over 30 years experience in the trade.

Anthracite Martini Bar GNH Kings cross London

For martini aficionados, who may be particular as to how their drinks are made, the martinis at this house are concocted by stirring the spirit with vermouth and ice before being strained into a chilled glass and then garnished.

The team at Anthracite include head bartender Balzas Nagy who ran the sister bar, GNH bar for three years with the bar managed by Athens born Gregory Kappas whose CV includes London’s Ace Hotel and the Soho House Group. The location, especially when there in the run to Christmas, means Anthracite is a buzzy location with a mix of travellers stopping off for a tipple before catching the train home and locals enjoying themselves in at the swanky hotel bar. The service is top notch with Gregory directing his well-oiled team seamlessly to ensure everyone is well looked after.  riddle_stop 2
