Keep calm and eat cheese
French brandy St-Rémy launches new collaboration with international cheesemonger, Rodolphe Le Meunier

Bored of the old cheese and port pairing? Here’s a new one for you: brandy and fromage. St-Rémy’s Master Blender, Cécile Roudaut, has collaborated with renown cheesemonger Rodolphe Le Meunier to develop a palette of perfect new pairings. Named Best Craftsman of France and Best International Cheese Maker in 2005 and 2007, Le Meunier’s cheeses are found on the best tables worldwide, from Paris and New York, to San Francisco, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
“France is well-known for its diversity of cheeses, but up until now, nobody has thought to associate them with brandy. People are used to enjoying cheese with wine or with port. With brandy it’s truly an entirely new tasting experience. Working with a ‘World’s Best Cheesemonger’ as well as ‘One of the Best Craftsmen of France’ has been a fantastic experience. Rodolphe isn’t any ordinary cheesemonger. I’ve discovered in him someone extremely creative, and so full of ideas,” Cécile Roudaut commented on the global collaboration.
At a degustation evening in East London by the Thames at Le Pont de la Tour, attendees got to sample Rémy VSOP X with Swiss Gruyere (raw cow’s milk cheese, delicate floral aromas), Camembert (where the powerful taste of the Camembert and it’s creamy texture softens the liveliness of the alcohol) or Stilton, it’s creamy texture and tangy taste perfectly balanced by the smoothness of St-Rémy VSOP. Another interesting pairing was with Old Mimolette (orange cheese with a brittle texture and a strong character), while Wood Smoked Goat Cheese worked wonderfully with St-Rémy XO, a different version of the brandy made in small French oak barrels and with a distinctive woody, roasted and slightly smoked aroma. Not only does brandy work as an alternative to Port for cheese pairings, it feels less sweet, giving the latter more space to be properly relished.
Rodolphe Le Meunier’s partnership with the iconic French brandy from the heart of the French Loire Valley is rolling out to key markets around the world and the St-Rémy social media platforms will feature new content featuring both Rodolphe and Cécile – so watch this space for surprising and new combinations.
