The recently re-invigorated Honor Oak gastro-pub offers good food – and a mouth-watering steak selection

The Honor Oak has recently been refurbished to include a trendy bar and gastro-pub type restaurant in this typical South London Victorian building. This local feels more upmarket than the usual corner pub but with a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere.
We started with an ample beef carpaccio served with watercress and horseradish and a pea and mint soup with freshly baked bread. For main courses, the salmon was fresh, served with crushed jersey royals perfectly cooked with cherry tomatoes as well as a succulent grilled tenderloin of pork served with celeriac mash. You will also find a tantalising array of different steaks on offer should that appeal, and some lovely chunky chips along with a wide array of other side dishes.
The kitchen is on view to the whole of the dining room, complete with bell service at one end and at the other end, a well-stocked fridge. The other customers were mainly locals, curious about this new venue that has recently opened. We saw friends and couples, but be aware after 8pm, no children are allowed in the pub and there were certainly none in the restaurant when we were there. The decor is rustic modern and clean; neutral walls with mismatched, stripped-back tables and chairs and strategic LED lighting. The staff are also very friendly and feel like you could get to know them as a regular customer over several months. Thus in time, this restaurant will be as popular in this up and coming area as it deserves to be.
