A Hound Friendly Bolt Hole

Searching for that dog friendly bolt hole? Seek no more, Huntsham Court in Tiverton lays out the red carpet for one’s four legged chum

Doggedly searching online for that perfect pad for a celebration, clan gathering or wedding can prove daunting at the best of times and for those whose four-legged friends are as much a part of the family as the kids, in-laws and great aunt Anne, trying to find a dog-friendly bolthole can, often, be fruitless.

Intuitive to their customers’ needs, the owners of Huntsham Court – the private-hire Victorian mansion close to Tiverton in Devon – decided not to be ‘dog-friendly’ but to be ‘pawsitively’ delighted when guests bring their four-legged friends to stay.  A selection of special touches just for visiting pooches, called Huntsham Hounds, is in place to ensure everyone – canines included – is spoiled rotten.

Inspired by co-owners Christopher Badham and Damian Llambias, Huntsham Hounds helps ensure guests enjoy a truly ‘home from home’ experience at the 35-bedroom Devon manor house, they’ve restored to its full former Tudor Gothic style glory. Themselves owners of Elby, a rough-haired Slovakian pointer, they see no reason why dogs should be left out of the fun.

Well-behaved Huntsham Hounds enjoy full access to the entire three-storey house and its five acres of gardens, including Garden Cottage and the Gatekeeper’s house – if hired by their owners as part of their celebration or event. They can enjoy their favourite foodie treat during their stay and if they prefer their own bed to cosying up in one of the estate’s 42 suites and bedrooms, comfortable dog beds are available.

Huntsham Hounds is offered as a complimentary service, another way in which Christopher and Damian are leading the pack. Additional bespoke services are willingly arranged on request including doggy friendly baked goods and professional dog grooming, which come at an additional charge. For weddings and civil partnerships, special arrangements can be made to accommodate guests’ dogs, whether they are participating in the ceremony or simply enjoying the spectacle.

Christopher said: “Dogs are such treasured members of the household and to we wanted to ensure our guests enjoy the relaxed grandeur of Huntsham Court to the full, without worrying about Fido – or Bella, Poppy or Alfie – left lonely at home. With five acres of gardens to romp and roam through during the day, our guests may find their dogs are fast asleep by suppertime, I know Elby often is! Whatever the weather, walkies are a wonderful way to clear away the cobwebs and enjoy lungfuls of our delicious Devon air.”

Huntsham Court enjoys a postcard-esque setting close to the village of the same name with its winding leafy lanes and easy access to Exmoor National Park which welcomes dogs year-round (on leads in birding season, 1 March – 31 July and at all times near cattle) and actively encourages visitors to bring their dogs to explore its 620 miles of public rights of way.

Huntsham Court, which is available for private hire, boasts five grand reception rooms and extensive grounds that can comfortably accommodate up to 130 guests for large functions with smaller rooms available for more intimate events. riddle_stop 2
