Last Thursday, Riddle was lucky enough to be invited to the party to celebrate La Martina’s boutique opening. The Argentinian brand, synonymous with the high goal game and the stylish polo lifestyle, has added a central location to its well-known store at Guards Polo Club on Smiths Lawn. Among the many guests thronging the shop and the street outside were the President of the Federation of International Polo Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers and the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) Chairman Brigadier John Wright as well as many players, patrons and aficionados of the game.
Since opening its first store in Buenos Aires in 1984, La Martina has expanded all other the world with now over 70 stores. It sponsors and supports many of the most exciting high goal tournaments around the globe, from the Argentinian Championships at Palermo to the Beach Polo World Cup in Miami and Polo in the Park at the Hurlingham here in London. As well as competitions, the brand also backs a number of teams including those from some major English Public Schools, the Ivy League and RMA Sandhurst.
At the party, guests were kept hydrated with champagne and 21 year old Royal Salute whisky as well as canapés provided by Gaucho restaurant. Global brand partner Maserati was also on hand, to escort a number of La Martina’s kit ambassadors, including Malcolm Borwick and Eduardo Novillo, down Jermyn Street as they showed off some of the firm’s technical polo gear on horseback.
The stores itself is a blend of both English and Anglo-Argentinean style weaving together the comfort and decorations of polo club houses and the hacienda to provide a luxurious backdrop to the brands clothing and equipment. La Martina’s high tech polo boots and knee pads are quite distinctive with their coloured rubber shock absorption pads on the outside of the boot to dissipate the impact when riding off.
