City Slicker

With sweeping city views, a couple of seductive drinking bars and slick rooms, the Mondrian Park Avenue is a prime spot to absorb the energy of New York

Review by Justine Gosling

The taxi from New Jersey airport pops out of the seemingly endless Lincoln tunnel beneath the Hudson River, and suddenly I’m in the thick of it. Sirens blaring, horns hooting, advertisement signs flashing and people everywhere. I’m in mid-town Manhattan and I wasn’t quite prepared for the immediate entrance into the chaos.

Located in the centre of Manhattan in the NoMad neighbourhood, just blocks from the Empire State Building and Madison Square Park, the Mondrian Park Avenue is convenient and sleek hideout in this 24/7 city.

Park Avenue was originally known as Fourth Avenue and carried the tracks of the New York and Harlem Railroad starting in the 1830s. The railroad originally ran through an open cut through Murray Hill, which was covered with grates and grass between 34th and 40th Street in the early 1850s. A section of this “park” was later renamed Park Avenue in 1860.

Seductive and striking, the Mondrian Park Avenue captures the energy of New York, and tones it down to a more relaxed vibe. The 189 guest rooms are as daring as they are sleek and sophisticated with their design. I stayed in a Deluxe King room that looked out to the East. The dozens of mirrors scattered around the room reflected the winter sunshine that poured through the windows every morning. The room comprises of a divine king-size bed, floating writing desk and generously proportioned seating area fitted with a large LCD TV and locally curated mini bar. The bathroom featured a walk-in, double-headed showers partnered with lustrous marble counters and Ciel Spa products.

The hotel doesn’t have a gym; better than that, I received free daily passes to the nearby premier Equinox gym just one block away so that my fitness regime didn’t suffer like my usual healthy eating habits.

The hotel boasts sweeping New York City views from the rooftop lounge, a sun lit retreat during the day overlooking the bustling city with indoor and outdoor seating that come night time, turns into a viewing gallery of the sparkling city lights to be enjoyed with a cocktail. For a more subtle night cap, beneath the hotel via a hidden entrance, Never Never serves as an intimate nightlife lure for the who’s who of New York City’s party scene.

The Mondrian is superbly located hotel in the centre of Manhattan with everything you need to sleep well, relax, work out, view gaze and drink. riddle_stop 2
