No11 Up to the Mark
Thriving Pimlico eatery offers a relaxed and tasty start to a lazy weekend
Review by Rupert Watkins
Brunch appears to be the meal du jour amongst the professional eating classes. A cursory glance through any good paper’s food section reveals a glut of reviews of places offering it, or articles on how it is voraciously taking over breakfast and lunch in modern-day London. As someone clearly not on trend and so positively antediluvian, brunch is a rare and thus rather welcome treat for me.
Which is why Riddle found itself heading eagerly to No 11 Pimlico Road to investigate its brunch offerings. Part of the Darwin and Wallace group, this capacious gastro pub has been around for just over 18 months and, certainly judging by what I encountered as I wandered in, has firmly established itself as a firm favourite in this particular part of SW1. The place was heaving with families, groups and a couple of individual brunch aficionados – always a good sign.
Well furnished, open and light with what is now the requisite mismatching furniture, the stripped-back wood décor and blue finish of the interior is clearly beach-front Hamptons inspired, and does give a relaxed background to very good and well-presented food.
My sourdough bruschetta was substantial and tasty, the spinach leaves nice and fresh. The bacon was crisp and the avocado plentiful and ripe. With fat warm roast tomatoes and a drizzling of mayonnaise, it was a most pleasant first meal of the day. My friend’s eggs royal was also judged a definite success. The salmon and house-made hollandaise sauce were both commented on very favourably too. Good coffee and a thick, rich hot chocolate accompanied the meal.
The service was good, not only attentive but not pushy – I wasn’t pressurised about the fact that my friend was running a little late -so I was left able to enjoy the atmosphere and indulge in a spot of people watching. We did not sample the delights of the stylish and clearly efficiently run bar – more fool us (but it does give one an excellent reason to return). Should the rest of the menu and service be as on-the-button as our meal today, the crowds will no doubt continue to throng into this friendly place.
