Cocktails with a Kick
Smart and chic Conduit Street watering hole is a wonderful spot to kick off the cocktail hour
Review by Rupert Watkins
Wandering off the busy corner of New Bond Street and Conduit Street, you are confronted with the richly carpeted, Art Deco inspired bar. Elegant and comfortable, it is an excellent spot to start an evening or take a date. Service – as one would expect of a five star hotel bar – is effortless and attentive.
The Polo Bar changes its selection of cocktails on a regular basis. There are inventive twists on old classics, my Normand Julep was made with eight year old Calvados giving a seasonal warmer edge to a summer time drink. My companions’ martinis were given a decided thumbs up along with squeals of delight. Those who desire more conventional classics are well catered for – the bar staff will knock up anything the customer wishes. Among their signature cocktails is the Mayfair Gold, a refreshing gin based drink with lychee, elderflower and a splash of Moët Rosé champagne. Sticking to longer and more unusual drinks, the Polo Treacle – with Glenfiddich 15 year old whisky, Amaro Ramazzotti and pineapple foam – was likewise rather drinkable, with the whisky again providing seasonal warmth.
To accompany the wide array of cocktails and comprehensive listings of whiskies, vodkas, brandies and wine, the bar also serves a changing smorgasbord of bar snacks. Octopus carpaccio with chilli was delicious and the foie gras filled cones with pistachio likewise moreish. Panko crusted prawns also decidedly hit the spot. As one would expect though, the bar snack prices are high – those alcoholics amongst you may be better to keep that hard-earned wedge dry for more liquid based stimulants!
The courteous bar staff are happy to chat and suggest cocktails that may take your fancy – if your current account is healthy enough you could cheerfully leave the entire liquid evening in their capable hands. However, even for a swift one this is an elegant and tasteful way to start an evening in Mayfair. Dress up and pop in.
