As I wait patiently to cross the road, hair haphazardly decorates my face, my jeans are sopping wet from the knees down, and I may as well be standing directly in a puddle as my Balenciaga sneakers haven’t survived the wrath of a UK summer deluge.
Last week I was basking in the blazing sun at the top of a watch point, with breath-taking views over the Mediterranean sea at Purobeach‘s newly launched beach club. It all seems a distant memory now…
Described as an “Oasis del Mar” the club is built into the cliff-face, on the edge of Illetas beach in a very peaceful cove surrounded by creamy vanilla sand. Enjoying a lively launch party on the 12th April (pre-approved by the welcoming neighbours) the über classy beach club is a welcome addition to the area in favour of its unwelcome predecessor, a noisy nightclub.
With panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, and playground for the rich and famous, you’ll be in good company as a variety of luxury boats dock in for a spot of lunch. But you don’t need to be on the Forbes list to enjoy a slice of heaven, if just for one day at the Purobeach, Illetas.
The plush beach club decorated solely in white, offset by the Puro earthy town beach towels and sweeping palm trees, offers the best views of Palma bay, and is idyllic for sipping your early evening mango daiquiri while the sun goes down. The creamy white leather day beds start from just 30 euros, and include the Puro signature towel service, welcome tray with fresh fruit, cold towel, water, after sun and smoothie. If you’re feeling flush, opt for the Balinese bed with canopy, ideal for a family – which the Illetas crew welcome with open arms. We pitched up in the terrace area adjacent to the restaurant – with a bed of silky sand to keep the little one occupied.
White symbolises perfection, and carrying that theme throughout, the opulent ‘everything white’ restaurant and terrace bar boasts the group’s globally inspired food and drink menu. Bloody Mary linguini anyone? There’s the mouth-watering Tomahawk – 1.2kg of matured T-bone steak for the ravenous; superfood salad or bresaola will hit the spot for the less insatiable appetite. If it’s sugary treats you desire, satiate your cravings with ‘Gino’ – fresh fruits gratineed with thick white chocolate and vanilla pod ice cream – absolutely divine.
Be mindful en route to the terrace bar where there are steep steps to get down to the beach club, and although there’s a lift option (which we discovered on leaving), it’s well worth the meander down, if only for the panoramic views – so eschew those heels for sensible step-friendly sliders.
With sea so shimmering and clear, it seems like diamonds are doing a celebratory dance on the surface of the sunlit sea, and diamonds are certainly the order of the day as this luxurious club has all the sumptuous touches, A * service yet it’s accessible for all.
Since the Purobeach creation in 2004, the group has rapidly become one of the biggest and successful companies in the beach club sector, and there are five Puro Group locations in Palma alone (The original Purohotel Palma, Opio Bar & Restaurant, Puro Spa Palma, Purobeach Palma & Illetas) as well as three franchises in Marbella, Barcelona and Vilamoura with more expansion due for 2018.
