Riddle me this…… Donald Edge
Riddle gets up close and personal with the man behind the CODE
If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
If then, was when I first began handling exquisite antique jewels with their hidden stories, then yes…. For I never would have had such enjoyment learning, designing, and meeting the most extraordinary people that one would normally only ever dream about meeting.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Always own the best you can afford…. and always take care of your health.
What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
I always find any rumour that I hear to fall so short of the reality that I tend not to take attention!
What was your biggest break?
My godmother, Pam, insisting I take my first retail space on Kings Rd. I never looked back.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
Back when I was 21 and going to those marvelous 21st bashes I was at David Morgan’s 21st, who is still a very close friend, and his father said in his speech: “ I am not going to wish you all good luck. For good luck, comes from hard work; and from hard work this allows you be in the right place at the right time. And that is what is called good luck.” So I don’t consider myself lucky but I do consider myself hard working.
What’s most important in your life?
I could be flippant and say always to have at least a dozen bottles of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs champagne chilled. However, lessons have taught me that I am terribly trusting and so I value the advice my family and true friends give me above all else.
What brands do you admire?
Wolf and Badger – a marvelous young crowd that supports UK designers.
John Lewis Partnership – because they deliver on their promise to me everyday.
Liberty – I first fell in love with that creaking staircase as a small child in 1973.
R.M. Williams – This Australian boot company I grew up with as they have the best boots in the world.
Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
Difficult to choose between slipping between freshly laundered sheets after a marvelously relaxing bath and travelling comfortably … I guiltily love both!
Describe your personal sense of style.
It is the same for both my jewellery design and my personal style. I draw on the best of the past but look to the future. Clothing is elegantly relaxed with well cut jackets teemed with jeans and the best accessories. I am told my home also has the same sense of timeless sophistication – friends tend to kick of their shoes and want to stay forever… and it is the same for my jewellery, friends and clients put my jewellery on and want to wear it everyday.
