Riddle me this… Grant Neave
Up close and personal with the UK Ambassador for Monkey Shoulder
If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
Yup. I’d probably do it for free! (maybe not tell the bosses that bit)
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Very early on in my Bartending career I was told “you never know who you’re serving” which was a constant reminder for me to listen to my customers so I could find out more about them and give them a better experience when visiting the bar. It helped me to remain humble and more open to people’s opinions.
What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
I was visiting Edinburgh and was told by a bartender that I had a girlfriend, which was weird as I was single at the time.
What was your biggest break?
Getting the job of Head Bartender at Monteith’s in Edinburgh was a real springboard for my career, taking control of the cocktail list and influencing the bar team on what we could do with the drinks helped me get noticed.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
No, luck is what you make of it; I believe that if you are genuinely determined to achieve something it’s on you to make it happen.
What’s most important in your life?
My family and friends, without them influencing and moulding me, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
What brands do you admire?
I think Red Bull is a pretty awesome brand. When they put on an event it’s always super creative and looks like they’ve had a lot of fun coming up with something that exceeds people’s expectations. They get involved with some of the best athletes and work with them to push the boundary on what can be achieved in certain sports.
Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
I have a lot of guilty pleasures, though drinking Blue WKD with a bit of Port is probably the stand out.
Describe your personal sense of style.
My personal style is pretty relaxed, and probably more like someone half my age. Checked shirt, jeans and Nike’s are what you can generally find me wearing and if I happen to get invited to something where I’m required to wear a suit chances are that I’ll still have Nike’s on.
