Riddle me this… Jamie Wemyss

Up close and personal with the founder of JMW Furniture

If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
Absolutely. I didn’t think I’d be designing and making things of this standard and style when I started. The more I learn and the more technical it gets, the more I love it. So yes.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
-That you’re only as good as your last job.
-If you don’t test yourself you won’t improve (that’s been big for me the last 2 years).

What was your biggest break?
I was given the opportunity to fit a chalet in Verbier this year with a package of furniture, which has allowed me to grow as a designer/maker and a businessman. It’s opened doors and allowed me to get my portfolio to a place where I can walk into any meeting room or home confident that my designs and execution are good enough for anyone, anywhere.

What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
That I can fall asleep standing up (it’s not a rumour)…

Do you consider yourself lucky?
Very… I’ve had a very privileged upbringing, and more fun that I could ever wish for, but it’s how you use it that counts. Whether it’s benefitting your own life or other peoples, you must make the most of the ‘luck’.

What’s most important in your life?
My wife, family and friends, Frank, my dog. And music.

What brands do you admire?
There are many brands I admire for different reasons. Pinch Design is a company I really like for its style, not just in what it designs and makes but how it presents itself. I’m a big fan of Benchmark also, who design with real simplicity, but with a strong environmental agenda. I am a bespoke designer/maker currently, but when I develop my range which will be on its way soon, I will take inspiration from these guys in how to do it.

Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
Too many.

Describe your personal sense of style.
Trainers, jeans, a lively shirt, and a bit of dust. riddle_stop 2
