Riddle me this… Robin Hancock
Up close and personal with the seafood restauranteur and co- founder of Wright Brothers
If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
Absolutely 110%! I now know that starting a business involves great peaks and troughs, so I would tell myself to remember that the storms won’t last forever.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
To invest in people. You can have the best business idea in the world and supply the greatest products, but it will all come to nothing unless you have great people and a great culture.
What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
That someone had duplicated our Wright Brothers Borough Oyster Bar in Prague… turned out to be true!
What was your biggest break?
Getting a site in Borough Market in the early days when it was just beginning to fly.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
Yes – not many people can say that they just love coming to work every day. The world we work in is ever changing and I love the eclectic individuals in this industry.
What’s most important in your life?
Happiness, the most important currency in life.
What other brands do you admire?
Caprice Holdings and Hix. Again, it comes down to the people, not just the brand. There are people in these companies who have supported and paved the way to our success.
Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
Backgammon – I’m a closet online gamer.
Describe your personal sense of style.
I would say my personal style is classically smart. A shirt, trousers, jumper and jacket tend to be my go to for day to day at work and slightly more relaxed come the weekend (my kids are very sporty).
