Riddle me this… Sam Carlisle
Riddle gets up close and personal with the man behind the brand Augustus Hare
If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
Absolutely! It’s been an inspiring journey and has taught me a lot. For those reasons alone I’d do it again. With retrospect I’d probably find a business partner to share the journey at an early stage though.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
When under pressure try and think of that which is bigger than yourself; it restores perspective and enables you to get on with the task at hand.
What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
I’ve never heard a rumour about me that wasn’t sadly true!
What was your biggest break?
In terms of Augustus Hare, it was definitely living close to a silk mill and knowing someone who worked there. Without this connection I would never have started on the journey of building a brand.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
Yes – sometimes a little too lucky!
What’s most important in your life?
Having studied theology, maintaining a rhythm of prayer and faith helps me not lose sight of the bigger picture.
What brands do you admire?
I obviously admire Ralph Lauren, as someone who started out with just doing ties, but has managed to diversify so well and build such strong identities for all the segments of his brand. In terms of their products, I love some of the craftsmen on Savile Row – especially Huntsman and Henry Poole.
Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
I have been known to order one of those steaks for 2 people, just for myself…
