Riddle me this… Will Hogan
Riddle gets up close and personal with Farlows assistant retail manager
If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
I have absolutely no regrets and would do most what I’ve gone again, excluding some of the more stupid things! I had a very enjoyable game keeping career and have been fortunate enough to travel the world with it, which has subsequently led me to my current, and much loved role in Farlows.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
“Work hard, play harder”. Many people live for work whereas I feel that we should work so we can live better. My thinking it that this gives more chances to get out fishing and shooting with friends and family!
What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
I’ve had many about myself in the past, most of which aren’t really suitable to tell you here so I’ll keep those for another day! I guess it’s better to be talked about than not to be talked about at all, at least you’ve had an impact on life somewhere along the line. I’d hope it’s more often good than bad gossip anyway.
What was your biggest break?
It’s hard to say, landing my job in New Zealand when I was 21 was quite a life changer. I had never been too far away from the UK and upon receiving the job offer just had to up sticks and leave but I’m so pleased I did as that certainly built the foundations for where I am with my career today.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
In a word no. Generally speaking if it’s bad and going to happen, it tends to follow me around – let’s just say I have been quite accident prone in the past, but I’m still here so perhaps I am…
What’s most important in your life?
Family is always priority, then I guess my partner and dog. If I said shooting none of them would speak to me again… which would give more time for shooting… ummm I will have a think about that!
What brands do you admire?
With a view to regular clothing I have never been a massive fan of any brands in particular, however I never hesitate to recommend my favorite brands when it comes to getting the top kit for the field.
Depending on what I am doing, my personal favorites for game shooting are Schoffel and Laksen, they both offer quality kit. I’m a great believe in you get for what you pay for and clothing from these brands certainly stands up to the test of time.
If I am stalking I tend to go for a new brand to the UK called Swazi which I used in New Zealand. It’s absolutely brilliant kit and I can’t rave about it enough, in fact I’m tending to wear this for all of my sport now.
Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
I am partial to a pint of Guinness in the bath but that’s about as exciting as it gets!
