Riddle me This…Ruby Bell
Up close and personal with Ruby Bell, co- founder of byRuby food delivery
If you knew then what you know now……….would you still do it?
100 per cent yes! I knew it would be hard work but the happiness of creating something from nothing is like no other feeling. Don’t get me wrong there have been really tough days and lots of tears along the way but it’s all been worthwhile. I am always learning so much which makes each day thoroughly enjoyable and I get a real sense of achievement from all the hard work I’ve put in.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
I think it was from my fiancée Chris; he has supported me so much through this whole process – I am very lucky! Being a CEO himself he completely understands the struggles, confidence doesn’t come completely naturally for me. He told me, “If you believe in yourself then others will believe in you too” and it’s been so true!
What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
Don’t think there have been any… not that I can remember anyway!
What was your biggest break?
I think having two amazing women, Julia & Milly believe in me and having faith in the business idea enough to back me and support me. It’s been onwards and upwards ever since and I couldn’t have done it without their support.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
YES! Not a day goes by past without me thinking how lucky I am. I think a lot in life is down to hard work but a lot of luck too.
What’s most important in your life?
Definitely family and friends. Being able to still have time to build relationships with the people closest to me is the most important thing. Success can only make you so happy, you need love & friendships too!
What brands do you admire?
There are so many brands which I admire. I think Cook have done so much for the frozen food world, it’s made people understand that frozen food can be high quality. It’s helped to move people away from relating frozen food to poor quality meals. I think AllPlants have really shaped the way for ethical frozen food, I like their packaging too. They are also helping people understand that frozen food is not only amazing quality but can also be more sustainable which is what we try to do here at By Ruby.
I also love FarmDrop not only does the founder sound like a genuinely lovely man but I also love the concept of connecting people to small food producers and independent farmers.
Pact Coffee were one of the first direct to consumer subscription coffee companies which is very admirable, they buy direct from farmers giving them a much better price for their coffee and working with them to produce better beans.
Finns of Chelsea is a brand that has been around for over 30 years, they are independent and have been at the forefront of artisan food, one of London’s first delicatessens, I’ve worked here for over three years and I’ve learned so much.
Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
I love sweets – they are my nemesis, there is nothing better than a sugared covered jelly sweet. The older I get the more restricted I am – so my teeth are thanking me!
Describe your personal sense of style.
I am very aware of ethics when it comes to fashion; I think fast fashion is slowly costing the earth amongst other things. I am definitely a trainer girl, I like to be able to walk quickly and be practical and this usually consists of exercise/streetwear. I think I am a bit of a tomboy at heart.
