Riddle reviews St Lucia’s first full service luxury villa
Review by Rachel Ritfeld
Guests are greeted by a majestic flamboyant tree, proudly towering over the shrubs of hibiscus, heliconia, ferns which welcome you along the thoughtfully delicate path, passing a historical sugar cauldron turned fish pond before leading to the main entrance of “St Lucia’s first full service luxury villa”- Villa C’est La Vie.
Based in Trouya Pointe, on the north west coast of St Lucia, you will find this immaculate 5 bedroom property, which sleeps up to 12 people. Each bedroom of the main 3 bedroom villa is a full suite, respecting the privacy of each visitor. The names of each of the bedrooms celebrate a dominant tree in the garden: Julie Mango, Flamboyant and Golden Apple. At pool level below the main villa you have the spacious self contained Cherry apartment with handmade soaking tub. And finally the adjacent cottage is named the Royal Palm Suite also known as the honeymoon cottage.
When owners Michael and Maria Thom renovated the original retreat in 2006 their focus was clearly on an immaculate finish and impeccable style merging Caribbean and Balinese design. The living space effortlessly flows with its surroundings with the use of walaba shingles and greenhart and cedar doors and windows.
The unconventional shape of the swimming pool amidst the tropical foliage evokes a sense of tranquility and complete relaxation as it winds through the garden. Wishes of all ages and circumstances are catered to here, providing the perfect balance for the entire family. My daughter, Rosalia, spent hours on the Zayak under the water feature in the pool that was constructed from Soufrière stone, while I strolled through the gardens studying every fruiting tree which brought back memories of my childhood in Suriname.
If that was all Villa C’est La Vie offered it still would have been perfect but there was still more to come! Nicole, the concierge, walked us through the gardens, which felt more like a fruit orchard with the most romantic lay out making it easy to imagine some of the destination weddings they have hosted there.
Suddenly we came to an ornate gate in the corner of the garden which took us down a little cobble stoned path to the picturesque Couti Cove fit for a Hollywood romcom. This hidden gem was so sweet and secluded making us feel like discoverers as we returned with our snorkelling gear, which is considerately provided by the villa staff.
I can’t compliment the butler and other villa staff enough who seemed to magically read our minds as they knew exactly how to navigate our wishes before we even knew what we wanted ourselves while simultaneously being respectful of our privacy at all times, making us feel completely at home. Our dietary requirements were discussed prior to arrival and catered to by the chef from @rentachefslu who’s secret ingredient of love is stirred into every pot and tossed into every salad.
