As Baltic winter temperatures wreak havoc with your face, it’s time to ramp up your skincare routine. Your skin will be parched and crying out for richer formulas as your usual SPF moisturiser just isn’t making the grade. Just as your body requires warmer attire, your face needs an extra layer of support too. Winter worthy skincare comes in the form of barrier and recovery creams, supporting the skin’s own barrier against dehydration.

“In winter you want to increase the barrier function of the skin with a product that helps prevent water loss. You must also incorporate SPF protection three hundred and sixty five days a year. Harmful UV rays, even in winter, will age your skin prematurely”, says cosmetic dermatologist Dr Russo.

To assuage the effects of a chillier climate, here’s our pick of the best barrier creams to keep skin happy and hydrated:

Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre, £12.99
A French pharmacy favourite (and our Beauty Ed, Lauren’s), and a fashion week backstage essential. This cream is rich, unctuous and full of vitamins and essential fatty acids; perfect for perking up the most parched skin.

Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream, £2.99

It’s ideal for harsh conditions like the biting cold when skiing and boarding, and can also be used to calm, soothe and heal eczema and other skin conditions.

Dr Hauschka Rose Day Cream, £29.50
Dry, reddened and sensitive skin will love this nourishing formula with rich and soothing ingredients like rose, avocado and extracts of marshmallow. The wild rose hips nurture and balance sensitive skin, will the avocado oil helps retain moisture.

Aesop Elemental Facial Barrier Cream, £39
This rich, buttery barrier cream is ideal for soothing winter ravaged skin. It’s ideal for dry and sensitive skin types, on top of those exposed to harsh conditions. The rich emollient ingredients soften, hydrate and provide adequate barrier protection for the skin. Warm the product in the hands before applying.
