Riddle me this… Phoebe Brookes

Brand Ambassador at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

If you knew then what you know now… would you still do it?
Yes, without a doubt. It’s funny where you end up; I certainly didn’t think I’d be working in the world of whisky. But when you’re given a chance, you have to grab it with both hands and see where it takes you.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Never pretend you know the answer to something that you don’t. That applies to everything – from job interviews to whisky tastings. You can’t have all the answers!

What’s the weirdest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
Thankfully, I’ve not once heard a rumour about myself!

What was your biggest break?
Joining a temping agency during my summer holidays at university in 2011. My first placement was described to me as “helping out for a couple of weeks polishing glasses at a whisky club”. It turned out to be The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s London venue.

It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with single cask whisky and for me to become part of the London team. Four years later, I am a Brand Ambassador for The Scotch Malt Whisky Society and get to travel the globe representing a brand that I love. That feels like a very big break indeed!

Do you consider yourself lucky?
Yes, in a way. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time with a great bunch of people. But it was up to me to prove my worth.

What’s most important in your life?
My friends and family. I spend a lot of time away from them but when I see them it’s like no time has passed. After my friends and family, I’d say my whisky collection follows closely behind in third place.

What brands do you admire?
Diane Von Furstenberg – her designs are feminine, modern and fun. When my brother got married I saved up for a gorgeous coral DVF dress to wear to his wedding. Within a few hours of wearing it I’d managed to spill most of my dinner on it! I was devastated!

Do you have a guilty pleasure – if so what is it?
I’ve lost hours of my life watching videos of sloths on YouTube. They could be doing anything – crossing a road, sleeping, eating – it doesn’t matter, I’ll watch it.

Describe your personal sense of style.
Usually I’m wearing something navy and my gold Seiko watch – a gift from my Dad, which I’ve treasured for the last 10 years. riddle_stop 2
