The Theory of California
For those looking to down size for the weekend and step off the treadmill of city life, Riddle offers the perfect get away
Review by Andy Barnham
Located in East Sussex, The Gallivant hotel is a stone’s throw from Camber Sands. Frequently used as a location for cinema, The Theory of Everything featured a scene in the dunes and Riddle’s own photo shoot is here, Camber Sands offers seven miles of beaches and seafront. It is therefore quite fitting that The Gallivant takes it’s inspiration from California and aims to be ‘shabby chic’.
The single story hotel offers 20 rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms, handmade driftwood furniture, flat screen TVs and free wifi. All rooms come with King size beds as a minimum with deck rooms offering access to private outdoor space and interconnectivity for those who may need it. The Gallivant’s welcoming atmosphere is extended to dogs, though small breeds are more suitable than larger ones.
Rates include afternoon tea and breakfast; fresh fruit and muesli as well as two eggs, cooked any way you’d like them are available along side a recovery station that offers endless Bloody Mary’s. For those who are able, dinner is a must (Riddle’s review is here).
The Gallivant is perfect for those looking to get away to the seaside (at low tide the sea retreats so far it’s barely visible) and is a popular location for couples wishing to tie the knot on the beach. Book early to avoid disappointment.
